The Fundraising

One thing more than any other inspired me to push through the undoubted challenges of this long winter journey – the sores, the cold, the exhaustion, the missing of my beautiful wife and more. To raise $50,000 for Our Yarning, even more if I could (and did!).

I have worked closely for a number of years as an Ambassador for Save the Children supporting their great work with a number of fundraising ventures. Our Yarning brings this fundraising closer to home, to support our First Nations children to learn their own stories from books written and illustrated by Indigenous authors and illustrators.

As a writer, I understand the importance of stories and totally recognise the need to maintain the stories and knowledge held by our Indigenous Australians. And the best way to ensure this is to pass them onto children.

You can stil contribute to the fundraising here either with a direct donation or by buying yourself a snow resort or a mountain as detailed below.

Yes, you could ‘own’ the highest mountain in Australia, in Victoria or the ACT. Yes you could ‘own’ one of the 12 snow resorts I plan to visit. Of course if you have another favourite mountain or place in the alpine country you’d like to buy then go ahead and suggest it. We might be able to bring it to market for you!

So do it for yourself, get some mates together to go in with you, perhaps your ski club (or any club), your company, your school. Most of all do it for Our Yarning! See all the options below.

 Our Yarning

In Indigenous communities all across Australia, access to quality, educational and engaging books, written by Indigenous authors, can be very hard to find. So, I set a target of $50,000 for Our Yarning, to fund the writing, illustration and production of a number of books as well as the hosting of a workshop for budding indigenous authors and illustrators.

Alpine Odyssey was my primary fundraising event for Our Yarning.

Our Yarning empowers Aboriginal communities to create and share the stories that will educate their children, now and for generations to come.

A combination of factors drew me to support Our Yarning as my next Save the Children fundraiser. As a writer and adventurer, I am increasingly aware that this spectacular country has been home to the world's oldest culture for tens of thousands of years. A culture that has a complex and rich vein of storytelling. It is so important these stories continue to be told, read and understood by the youngest members of that culture.

Restricted travel during the pandemic did, to some extent, turn my own eyes back to Australia and I liked the idea of raising funds for those writing and illustrating their stories. Stories that increase both knowledge and literacy levels for Aboriginal and Torres Strait children.

These are stories from our first nation but these are stories to be appreciated too by all of our nation today.

I ended up raising $65,000 which will help fund the writing, illustration and production of 15 books as well as hosting of a workshop for budding indigenous authors and illustrators.

The books are freely available on the Our Yarning digital library via a free app for Android and iPhone. The app will host a unique, curated collection of high-quality children’s books. The books are age appropriate, culturally relevant and engaging for kids and totally free for children to read.

I also plan to be hands on wherever possible, visiting communities that are engaging with Our Yarning, attending workshops and helping where I can with the initiative.

You can read more here about Our Yarning - Library For All.

To buy a mountain or a resort for Huw's Our Yarning fundraising, simply go to the fundraising page and choose the resort or mountain you wish to buy.

We'll then mark it as sold, and you will be lauded on the honour roll as the new owner (unless you want to remain anonymous) and even receive the Title Deeds for a good deed done!

Of course if you have another favourite mountain, place, ski run or whatever in the alpine country, just let us know and we’ll see if we can bring it to market!

Mountains For Sale

Mount Kosciuszko

The BIG one, Australia and NSW’s highest mountain. Imagine standing on your own 2228 metre summit as master or mistress of all you survey, of all of Australia. Enough said.

SOLD!! - $5000

Mount Bogong

Looking imperiously across the state of Victoria and staring down on her subjects, 1986 metre Mount Bogong is deserving of respect and a good price for her delights. She even comes with a handful of huts on her flanks to add value to your real estate holding.

Mount Jagungal

The Big Bogong, the Big J, the crouching lion of Mt Jagungal is Australia's most northerly 2000 metre peak and stands sentinel over the northern end of Kosiciuszko NP. We brought it to market at the request of some friends who Huw used to ski guide 20+ years ago, including their first Kiandra to Kosi ski traverse.

SOLD!! - $2500

Mount Bimberi

Keeping a wary eye on our political leaders down below in Canberra, 1911 metre Mount Bimberi is perhaps the Federal ICAC of Australian mountains. And, like the Federal ICAC we need, it also deserves a good level of funding.

Blue Lake

The largest and deepest of our glacial lakes and Australia's premier ice climbing venue. More fun to ski down those chutes than to climb up them though.

SOLD!! - $501

Resorts For Sale

Own one or buy a few. An investment in Indigenous children’s education will reward you spiritually, not just for winter, but for years to come.

Lake Mountain

So close to the city, it’s worth owning by one of you fine Melbourne citizens. Such a convenient bolthole and, with only XC skiing available, your fitness is guaranteed. As the first place I ski on my Odyssey, it’s priced at a special introductory rate!

SOLD!! - $500

Mount Baw Baw

Despite the pronunciation of the name it is actually a really interesting place. Interest added to by the fact that it is where I start my long journey in 2022, as it was where I started in 1997. Great for families, perfect to start your snow real estate portfolio.

SOLD!! - $1500

Mount Stirling

One for the ski tourers or those of Scottish descent, Stirling is a place I’ll be very pleased to reach some two weeks into my Alpine Odyssey. And being so close to Mt Buller, you can enjoy all the pleasures there but then head back to your tree change location.

SOLD!! - $1010

Mount Buller

The first of the big resorts I’ll ski at, and home to many successful Australian Olympians. Why not let some of that success rub off on you and buy the place? It will be a BIG challenge for me to get there, why not incentivise me further?

Mount Hotham

The highest resort village in Australia offers not just stunning views but the fitness benefits of being at altitude. Imagine how smug you’d feel sitting, with gin and tonic in hand, as the sun sets across Mount Bogong, Mount Feathertop and the resort beneath your feet.

Dinner Plain

There’s nothing Plain about this beautiful little village that some might say is one of the best looking places in Australia. Imagine having Dinner here, night after night, week after week, season after season. So close to big brother Hotham up the road, perhaps both could be a family purchase?

SOLD!! - $750

Falls Creek

Access via the town of Mount Beauty is a pretty good ‘sense of arrival’ to your beautiful new purchase. Fall for Falls, like many before you have, and you will not be disappointed.

SOLD!! - $2520

Mount Buffalo

The views, the views! And those rockfaces too. A renovator’s delight, Mt Buffalo may have lost some of its ski gloss in more recent years but it still comes with the famous and heritage listed Chalet where you could entertain friends and family. A renovator’s delight! And for those who like tinkering, there are a few old ski lifts that you might be able to breathe new life into. It really is a bargain.

SOLD!! - $1020

Thredbo

On the flanks of Mount Kosciuszko. What an address! The longest ski runs in Australia. What a challenge! Thredbo is renowned for being the favourite of the Sydney skiing glitterati. If you’re one of them, you’ll want the Thredbo trinket to show off to your friends. If you’re not, this will offer the perfect entry to a whole new world. A once in a lifetime opportunity.

SOLD!! - $2530

Charlotte Pass

Repel any unwanted (snow) boarders with your own snowbound village, with its historic Chalet and collection of lodges. I’d buy it if I could, given I first learned to ski here. The rest of course is history.

SOLD!! - $1510

Perisher

You want big we can give you BIG! There’s room for all the family and all your friends and hangers on here. Perisher is more like an estate than a single resort with options to spread everyone around, close to you but not too close. We are splitting the estate but will consider selling as a whole.

Blue Cow SOLD!! - $1030
Guthega
SOLD!! - $1050
Smiggins
SOLD!! - $1040
Perisher
(excl above) SOLD!! - $1060

Mount Selwyn

Some people like traditional, some like new builds. If you’re the latter, then this is a never to be repeated opportunity to purchase a brand-new snow resort, one that only came on the market in 2022.

Save The Children Ambassador

I first worked with Save the Children when I chose this international non-government organisation as the beneficiary of my incredible 13,000km, 12 month, 17 country circumnavigation of the Mediterranean in 2014-15. My journey from Gallipoli back to Gallipoli by sea kayak, foot, ocean rowboat and bike took place against the backdrop of the desperate refugee crisis spreading across the Mediterranean. Which compelled me to raise funds and awareness of that crisis.

In raising over $100,000 during that journey I became Save the Children Australia’s highest ever individual fundraiser and continue to work with Save the Children as a Community Ambassador.

I use my endeavours to both fundraise for Save the Children and raise the profile of their important work overseas and now here in Australia. I am proud to say that I have been responsible for over $250,000 raised to support Save the Children’s work across the world. And I appreciate every gift that I raise to allow Save the Children to carry out their work – and thank all my supporters for getting behind me.
